A prominent figure of the Bakumatsu era, Sakamoto Ryouma was a samurai who sought to modernize Japan through diplomacy rather than bloodshed. He famously brokered the Satsuma-Chōshū Alliance and established Japan's first modern corporation before being assassinated at the age of 31.
