Born into a distinguished noble family that eventually fell into ruin, Grimsley turned to gambling as a way to cope with his family's loss of status. This background shaped his view of life as a high-stakes game, leading him to become a master of Dark-type Pokémon. After serving as a prominent member of the Unova Elite Four, he eventually traveled to the Alola region to seek new experiences as a wanderer and expert Mantine Surfer.
