Brook is an extremely tall living skeleton characterized by his distinctive black afro and skeletal frame. In his Soul King persona, he wears heart-shaped sunglasses, a yellow feather boa, and vibrant floral trousers paired with a black coat. He typically carries a purple cane that conceals a frozen blade known as Soul Solid.

Brook was once the acting captain of the Rumbar Pirates before a poison attack wiped out his entire crew. Thanks to the Revive-Revive Fruit, his soul returned to the living world, but he was reduced to a skeleton after his soul took a year to find his body. He endured fifty years of solitude in the Florian Triangle before joining the Straw Hat Pirates to fulfill a promise to reunite with the whale Laboon.
