Character Turnaround: Front, Side and Back in One Image

A character turnaround shows one design rotated to the front, a three-quarter or side view, and the back, all at the same scale and standing side by side. That is the view artists, animators and 3D modelers ask for first, because it answers how the hair falls, where the seams sit and what the back of the outfit looks like. Write one description and the generator lays out all three views for you.

A Character Design Sheet for Any Style

The same layout works for anime heroes, chibi mascots, armored knights, mecha and creatures. Name the style in your prompt (cel-shaded anime, watercolor, 90s anime, chibi) and list what matters most: hair, outfit, colors and one signature item. The sheet keeps a plain background so the design is easy to read, trace or cut out.

Reference Sheets That Keep Your OC Consistent

A ref sheet is what keeps a character looking like themselves across drawings, commissions and scenes. It is also how our AI Story keeps each character on-model across every clip of an anime short film: the cast sheets on this page were made exactly for that. Upload your sheet with any image prompt to draw the same OC in new poses and settings.

From Reference Sheet to Full OC Profile

A visual reference sheet covers how your character looks. If you also want a name, age, personality and backstory laid out on the page, use the OC character sheet maker; for faces and emotions, add an expression sheet.

Types of Character Sheets You Can Make

Artists use these names loosely, so here is what each one usually means.

  • 01

    Character Turnaround

The same pose seen from the front, side and back (sometimes plus a three-quarter view), all at matching height. The standard starting point for animation and 3D modeling.

  • 02

    Character Reference Sheet (Ref Sheet)

A turnaround plus the details someone else needs to draw your character: color palette, accessories, close-ups of the face or a tattoo. Common for commissions and fandom OCs.

  • 03

    Character Design Sheet

A sheet that explores or finalizes a design: outfit variations, props and notes on materials. Use it when the design is still changing.

  • 04

    Model Sheet

The animation studio term for an on-model reference: proportions, construction lines and key poses, so every animator draws the character the same way.

  • 05

    Expression Sheet

A grid of the same face showing different emotions. Make one with the expression sheet generator once your turnaround is done.

How to Make a Character Reference Sheet

  1. Describe One Character

Start with who they are in a few words, then the visual facts: hair color and length, eye color, outfit layers, colors and one signature item such as a sword, a scarf or a hairpin. One character per sheet gives the cleanest result.

  2. Generate the Turnaround

The prompt box is already set up for a wide three-view sheet. Press generate, then check that the front, side and back match: same hairstyle, same outfit details, same proportions. If something drifts, name that detail more precisely and generate again.

  3. Download and Reuse It

Save the sheet as your character's reference. Share it with an artist for a commission, trace it for your own art, or upload it with a new prompt to put the same OC into scenes, poses or an anime short.

Character Reference Sheet FAQ

What is a character reference sheet?

A character reference sheet (or ref sheet) is a single image that shows everything needed to draw a character consistently: usually a front, side and back view, plus colors and key details. Artists, commissioners and animators use it so the character looks the same every time.

What is a character turnaround?

A turnaround is a set of views of one character rotated in place, typically front, three-quarter or side, and back, drawn at the same size and lined up side by side. It is the core of most reference and model sheets.

What is the difference between a reference sheet, a model sheet and a design sheet?

A reference sheet is for anyone drawing your character and focuses on the look. A model sheet is the animation version, with proportions and construction to keep a team on-model. A design sheet is used while the design is still being explored, with variations and notes.

How do I keep the character identical in every view?

Describe a single character, keep the outfit description specific (colors, layers, accessories), and avoid asking for many poses at once. Plain backgrounds and a full-body standing pose also help the views match.

Can I make a reference sheet from my own drawing?

Yes. Upload your character image in the prompt box and keep the turnaround prompt. The generator uses your image as the reference and draws the front, side and back views of that design.

Is the turnaround good enough for 3D modeling?

It is a solid concept reference for blocking out a model. For precise modeling, use it to settle the design, then draw or trace strict orthographic front and side views at exactly the same scale.

Can I make sheets for mecha, monsters or mascots?

Yes. The examples on this page include mecha, a stone golem, a cat mascot and a rabbit spirit. Describe the shape, materials and colors the same way you would describe an outfit.
