How to Use a Drawing Base
Three steps from a blank canvas to your own character.
Download the base
Pick a pose and download the PNG. Open it in Procreate, Clip Studio Paint, Krita, Photoshop or ibisPaint.
Sketch on a new layer
Lower the base's opacity, add a layer on top and draw the hair, face, clothes and accessories over it.
Adjust, then hide the base
Stretch limbs or change proportions to fit your character, then hide or delete the base layer when the line art is done.
Tips for Drawing Over a Base
A base gives you the pose; these habits make the finished drawing look like yours.
- 01
Change the proportions
Lengthen legs, widen shoulders or shorten the torso so the body fits your character's age and build.
- 02
Give clothes volume
Fabric sits on top of the body — let sleeves and skirts stand away from the base line instead of tracing it.
- 03
Keep the silhouette readable
Fill the pose in black: if an arm disappears into the body, turn it slightly outward.
- 04
Mix and flip bases
Combine a head angle from one base with the body of another, or flip a base horizontally for variety.
- 05
Start from a close pose
Pick the base nearest to your idea and adjust it; small changes are easier than redrawing a limb.

Frequently Asked Questions
Drawing Base FAQ
Answers about using, sharing and generating drawing bases.
What is a drawing base?
A drawing base is a simple body template in a certain pose that artists draw over to design a character faster. You add the hair, face and clothes, then hide the base.
Are these drawing bases free?
Yes. They're free to use (F2U) for your own drawings, with no sign-up and no credit required. Please don't resell or re-upload the bases themselves as bases.
Can I use them for commercial art?
Yes, you can use artwork you draw over these bases in commercial work such as commissions or merch. What isn't allowed is selling or redistributing the bases themselves.
Why are the bases bald and faceless?
So you can add any hairstyle and face without erasing anything. Each base wears a plain bodysuit so the pose reads clearly and stays suitable for all audiences.
Can I get a base in a pose that isn't here?
Yes. Describe the pose in the generator on this page and it creates a base in the same clean line-art style. To put your own character into a pose, try the AI Pose Generator.
Which apps can I use them in?
Any app that supports layers and PNG files, including Procreate, Clip Studio Paint, Krita, Photoshop, ibisPaint X and MediBang Paint.
