Japanese Name Generator with Kanji and Meanings
Get 12 realistic Japanese names at a time, each with its kanji spelling, hiragana reading and a character-by-character meaning. Choose full names, given names or surnames, set the gender and vibe, and add a meaning you want the name to carry — ideal for anime OCs, novels, games and roleplay.

How Japanese Names Work
A few basics make the results easier to read and to use correctly in your story.
- 01
Family name first
In Japanese order the surname comes before the given name: Tanaka Hina, not Hina Tanaka. English texts often reverse it, so pick one order and keep it consistent.
- 02
Kanji carry the meaning
Most names are written in kanji, and each character adds meaning. 陽菜 (Hina) combines 陽 "sun" and 菜 "greens".
- 03
Same sound, different spellings
One reading can be written many ways. Haruto can be 陽翔, 晴人 or 春斗, and each spelling tells a slightly different story.
- 04
Common endings
Traditional feminine names often end in -ko (子) or -mi (美), modern ones in -na, -ka or -ri. Masculine names often end in -ta (太), -to (斗 or 翔), -ki (輝 or 樹) or -rō (郎).
- 05
Surnames come from places
Many surnames describe the landscape: 田 rice field, 山 mountain, 川 river, 森 forest, 橋 bridge. Yamamoto (山本) literally points to the base of a mountain.
- 06
Hiragana shows the reading
Because kanji can be read in several ways, the hiragana reading tells you exactly how a name is pronounced.

Frequently Asked Questions
Japanese Name Generator FAQ
Answers about real Japanese names, name order, kanji spellings and free use.
Are these real Japanese names?
Yes. The generator uses kanji and readings that actually appear in Japanese names and avoids joke names. Rare spellings do exist in Japan, so treat the list as ideas and double-check any name you plan to give a real person.
Which order are Japanese names written in?
Japanese puts the family name first (Tanaka Hina). Many English translations flip it to Hina Tanaka. The generator shows the Japanese order so you can decide.
Why can one name have different kanji?
Japanese names are chosen for both sound and meaning. Parents often pick the reading first and then the kanji, so the same name can be written many ways with different meanings.
Can I choose a name by meaning?
Yes. Type a meaning such as sun, flower or courage in the optional field, and the generator will favor kanji with that meaning.
Can I use these names for anime characters or stories?
Yes. They work well for OCs, light novels, games and roleplay. For fantasy or stylized names instead, try the Anime Name Generator.
Is the Japanese name generator free?
Yes. It's free and needs no sign-up. There is an hourly limit per visitor so the tool stays fast.
